Why the button is orange
A board is a way of looking at your cards, and almost everything about it can be changed from the board itself: its mode, what it displays by, its filters, its ordering, which dimensions appear on the cards.
Those changes take effect immediately — but on your screen only. Nobody else sees them, and nothing is stored. The orange Board tools button is there to tell you that what you are looking at is no longer what the board is saved as.
Deciding what to do with your changes
Open Board tools, and the first entries deal with exactly that.

| Update board for all users | Saves what you see as the board's definition. Everyone who opens this board sees it that way from now on. |
| Reset to last save | Drops your changes and puts the saved board back. |
| Save as new board | Leaves this board as it was, and creates another one from what you are seeing. |
There is a fourth option: do nothing. Your changes belong to the page you are on, so leaving the board is enough to forget them.
The same three actions have keyboard shortcuts, listed at the bottom of the screen: s to save the board, r to reset it, a to save it as a new board.
Which entries you see depends on your rights on this board. Updating it for everyone needs the right to manage it, and saving a new one needs the right to create boards.
What does not turn the board orange
Searching. Typing in the board's search field narrows what you see without changing the board itself, so it leaves the button alone.
